If you want a simple way to ramp up the persuasiveness of your promotions, here’s what you need to do:

  1. Study winning ads.
  2. Identify the winning advertising appeals.
  3. Evaluate their winning headlines.
  4. Memorize their winning transitions.
  5. Break down their winning calls to action.

And then reverse engineer them!

That’s what I did, over and over again and I made millions.

I broke them down paragraph by paragraph, from the headline to the call to action. 

I emblazoned the discoveries in my mind like a cowboy brands a steer. 

In this way, I could see the available means of persuasion in any given situation and win the mind by argument and emotion because I had the outline tattooed into my brain.

Here are the steps to follow to reverse engineer a winning ad and use their built-in secrets to fashion your next winning email, landing page, or video sales letter. 

Step 1: Study Winning Ads

To reverse engineer a winning ad, you first need to find successful examples in your industry. Analyze them carefully and make note of what makes them effective. 

This can include their headlines, body copy, calls to action, and the overall structure of the ad. This is how I created one of my best-selling landing pages, “The One Stock That Will Make You a Marijuana Millionaire.”

Step 2: Identify the Emotional Triggers

The most effective ads tap into readers’ emotions, using fear, excitement, curiosity, or other powerful emotions to draw them in. Identify the emotional trigger in the ad you are studying and note how it is used throughout the copy. 

This is how I created “The Great Retirement Betrayal,” one of the most mailed subscription promotions of the 1990s, playing into the hopes and fears of millions and millions of baby boomers.

Step 3: Look for a Unique Angle

A winning ad needs to stand out from the crowd. Look for the unique angle in the ad you are studying and note how it differentiates it from other ads in your industry. Think about what makes your product or service unique and how you can communicate that in your headline. This could be a benefit, a feature, or a point of difference from your competitors.

Step 4: Analyze the Structure

Look at the structure of the ad and identify any patterns or formulas that may have been used. For example, some ads use questions, others use numbers, and some use “how-to” formulas. When you break down hundreds of ads, as I have, then you will see a formula forming. 

This is how I created my own “Million-Dollar Copywriting Formula” and applied it to every ad I have written. 

Step 5: Break it Down into Elements

Finally, break the ad down into its component parts, such as the main benefit, the target audience, and the action you want the reader to take. Take note of how each element works together to create a cohesive and persuasive message. 

Once I broke these ads down, I discovered one of my biggest secrets: writing effective transitions. Transitions that create a seamless flow from the headline to the call to action that keeps the reader engaged transition from the persuasive argument in the body copy to the clear and direct instructions of the call to action.

Step 6: Craft a Strong Call to Action

Craft a clear and direct call to action that tells the reader what to do next. Use urgency, scarcity, and social proof to encourage readers to take action right away.

Make no mistake about it — the ability to reverse engineer a winning ad is a valuable skill for any copywriter. 

By analyzing successful marketing campaigns and understanding what makes them effective, you can create more persuasive and compelling copy that drives results. 

Use these insights to craft messages that inspire your audience to take action and achieve your marketing goals. With practice and persistence, you too can become a successful copywriter.
